Winter came in hard here in Muskegon. We are in a deep freeze already. I'm thinking the lake will freeze and the ice fishermen will be happy. Me? I'll stay in the house most all winter, baking my dog cookies, working on my dog rescue stuff and taking care of the family. What better life could ya ask for?

I did finally get my tree up. The top looks funny...like it doesn't go with the tree. But, we've had it for several years and have just made due. Now, I want a new tree. You tell me what you think. I'll post a picture from last year. It always looks the same. LOL...

Now, the one sitting in front of the curtain is from 2005 the one sitting in front of Jesus is 2008. The tree is NOT that old. OYE! Anyway...my tree and village are up, my Christmas clock is up and I need to find time to bake. Other than that...I hope you all are well.

Hugs,

Doreen

Saving Gracie

We are trying to get Gracie, a GSD saved from being chained to a barn in Michigan. It was about eight am, the dogs were both taking their morning naps and all was quiet. I was on a corporate fast with my church as we are fasting and praying over a missionary's wife to be healed of cancer, along with some other things. So, as we sat here, slowly but surely, I kept smelling something that resembled chicken. I didn't say anything thinking maybe it was something in my trash but why would I just now be smelling it and why would it smell good? Was it cuz I was fasting? God? This is weird, I thought. I kept working on my autoresponder stuff on line, I mean, I was on line for a reason, not just messing around. LOL!

The longer I sat the stronger the smell became until now it was smelling like a full fledged chicken dinner...stuffing, chicken, gravey, the whole nine yards and I couldn't figure it out but it was smelling really good. Finally, I said something out loud.

"I smell chicken or something!"

Gary looked at me funny knowing full well, I did NOT cook chicken or anything because I was fasting. He said, "I smell something too, what is it?"

All of a sudden it hit me like a 2x4 between the eyes! It was the dogs' food! When I fed them this morning, they were almost out of their rice mix, so I started boiling carrots and celery, peas, green beans and apples! No wonder it smelled so good! I need to start using my timer. LOL!

Deaf Dogs

I started a social network called Going To The Dogs. Oh well, what's another winter cleaning snow off the car??

But the kids? Lucy not so much but Wrigley, he is already just freezing! My mom made him some really cute little jackets, but he won't keep them on his back. When I put one on him, he gets all silly and starts his "kitty" routine, rubbing against everything in sight until he un-velcro's it and it's laying at his feet. He is such a funny boy, see what I mean? Our comic relief! So, now, we have lots of lap blankets in the living room within reach. Wherever he lands, we can usually grab a blanket and cover him to keep him from shivering.

Lucy had a seizure!

I know I mentioned this in my last post but I wanted to create a post of it's own. Her last seizure was April 2007. She hasn't had one since I changed her food from crap food to human grade food. Now, I have to wonder if since I took her off of kibble all together if that has anything to do with her having a seizure or if it "just happened". I don't know but thankfully, she hasn't had another. Gary went out and got her some vitamins just in case that was what she was missing.

Life Has Been Hectic...Good, But Hectic

So many things have happened in the last couple of weeks...my folks were here for a few days while waiting for thier test results. Mom was waiting on a biopsy report, came back neg. Papa was waiting to see if he needed surgery and sure enough, when he went back home to the doctors, they scheduled him for the following Monday...Oct. 13.

Complications happened after surgery, when they took the vent tube out, his throat closed and they had to put it back in. Then, his kidneys formed a clot and he stopped producing urine. I live about 3 1/2 hours away and couldn't be with them. Mom called in a panic and God helped me get arrangements to get to them. All I knew is I needed to lay hands on him and pray. So, that's what I did. The doctors got his kidneys functioning but he was not out of the woods. I got there Tuesday evening.

Wednesday morning they were talking about putting him on life-support! His breathing was heavily labored, his eyes were not focused, he couldn't talk and his body and head was very swollen and yellow in color. While mom talked to the nurse about the life-support, which Papa didn't want, I went to him and asked him..."do you want to live and NOT die?" With everything he could muster, he said in a raspy voice, "Yes!" I said, "good. that's how we will pray then, that you will live and NOT die. I will lay hands on the sick and they SHALL recover according to God's word." Papa said, "Yes!" and so, I prayed and prayed and then Mom came in and prayed with me for about thirty minutes, we laid hands on him and prayed.

We prayed until he was praying with us!. He was saying, "Thank you, Jesus, Thank you, Jesus!" His eyes were focused, his breathing clearer, the swealing went way down in his face and he was able to talk. Dr. Jesus showed up and we were able to witness a miracle. No vent or life-saving method was needed other than our prayers and God meeting us. Papa goes home from the hospital Thursday, Oct 23, or 24.

Then, Sunday night, after church, Lucy had a seizure. First one she's had since April, 2007. It wasn't a bad one, but it was horrible just the same, poor girl.

This week, I'm working on getting ready for a craft show, Nov. 1. I'm swapping my clothes. My husband thinks I'm nuts for having such an event take place twice a year. LOL Plus...finding room for the larger winter clothes vs the summer clothes is not fun, but it something I am committed to do. Now, that is not what I love about fall, it just comes with it.

What I love about the fall is the fresh, crisp smell of leaves in the air. Wrigley is being very fussy with his dinner. I bought legs and thighs on sale for .99 per pound. I thought that was a good price, so of course, I bought a bunch of it, skinned it all (Gary had a fit and I think the dogs did too!) I put some i the freezer after washing it, turned some into chicken and dumplins for us and then put a bunch in the crock for the dogs, thinking that would be easier for me. Easier than boiling a big ole pot of water, then trying to cool big ole pot of water, then storing big ole pot of water.

Well...after chicken was cooked and cooled, I put the crock in fridge and deboned it the next day. I cleaned off the fat and left the jell and froze it until I needed to make rice. So, in a couple of days, I made rice, three pounds and pulled out the jell and put it in the pan of water along with a bag of carrots, some peas and corn from the fridge. I started it first thing in the morning and it cooled most of the day.

The next day, it was time for them to eat the rice. Wrigley was NOT happy with his breakfast or supper for that matter. The rice was mushy and just didn't taste right. I tried to hand feed him, feed him with a fork, but he still only ate about half of his usual portion. Hmm...what is the problem, I'm wondering.

Finally, it dawns on me, I didn't cook the chicken in the rice water. That must be it. These kids are spoiled! Well, he's gonna eat it or go hungry. LOL I mean, he's eating just not all of it, so I'm gonna have to cut down on Lucy's portion cuz she's eating her's and his both. They took her to the vet hospital and did raise enough funds to perform a sonogram. She was full of cancer and was euthenized with loving hands holding her. This is what the email said,
"I just learned the sad news that the sonogram was performed and Shaney was full of cancer and she was humanely euthanized this afternoon. So very sad that her family would dump her at a shelter this way.

Thank God she knew love and kindness and was comforted as she was given eternal rest."

Thank you all for your prayers and support.

SHANEY was rescued! She was just surrendered at the end of the day today by her owners who were moving and couldn't bring their loyal companion and friend with them. It is a shame that such a sweet, senior girl with some special needs could just be dumped at the pound. Shaney probably has impaired vision, and lost her right front leg when she was hit by a car as a puppy. She gets along fine with her remaining legs; it is what she's used to! It's easy to tell that in her day she was a beautiful girl. Unfortunately, Shaney is entering a new, strange place without her humans, and faces an uncertain future. She remained sweet and gentle through the whole impounding process, and happily relished in the attention of volunteers and officers. Nobody fussed, least of all Lucy. She wolfs her food down like there is no tomorrow. Wrigley, he's in no hurry, but there's nothing new about that. He's NEVER in a hurry, except when the mailman comes. Anyway, so I've noticed after the first pot of rice cooked, he started leaving a couple of green beans in the bowl. Now, he's leaving the peas! Mind you, they are all mixed in with the rice. We are on our third huge pot of rice. The second pot had frozen peas, the third pot; I just tossed in can of peas. One little can to a 5 gallon pot of rice. I know most of the peas stayed towards the top which is fine but still, he shouldn't be getting that many where he should be that picky! Anyway, now he is licking his food and all the rice and picking the peas and putting them in a pile.

Lucy on the other hand knows he's leaving these little treats and thinks he's leaving them for her. She waits and watches for him to finally finish so she can go clean his bowl.

I thought I was being a good mommy by getting them dishes on stands. Each one a different color. After Lucy had her leg surgery last spring, she stopped using hers because she started eating laying down. She would start out eating standing up, but half way through her meal, she would have her chin on her bowl as she slouched to the floor. Then she started laying down...WHINING! So, I set her bowl down and then she started eating again. Now, she just plops herself down where she wants to eat and I put her bowl between her legs. If she moves, and the bowl is not close to her, she won't come to the bowl, she wants the bowl to come to her. LOL Spoiled? Naw!

Wrigley is making a mess when he eats and then making a mess around his raised bowl thing, so I've decided he probably doesn't need his either. After he's done eating, he must wipe his face...ON EVERYTHING!, the blankets, along the couch, the chairs, the rug. LOL, he doesn't like a dirty face and if I wash it for him, he still goes through his own little ritual. Yeah, I have some silly kids I wouldn't take a million for!

google59cefe7924a1be40.html

Lucy Cried Wolf!

Well...it seems Miss Lucy has decided on another avenue of attention getting behavior. Not that I mind giving her attention...and lots of it. She's had a pretty hard life for a seven year old. But I do draw the line at her demands when she is standing in the middle of the living room, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, and lets out one bark, just to see if I'll get up. LOL! She's done this two nights in a row.

The first night, I thought I was imagining it, you know, how you may hear your spouse call your name when they really don't? I thought, "Doreen you are losing your mind, thinking Lucy is barking in the middle of the night!" But then...the next night, she did it again. I couldn't believe it! What is she thinking? Hungry? Gotta potty? She should be able to wait till 6, don't you think? Her second bark, bark was at 4:45.

Now, to her defense, she likes to wake early with me. When I worked at the office, we used to get up early and then earlier until we got up at 2 or 3am. That is how I got started writing my books. But...I'm not writing right now and she doesn't know that. LOL, so anyway, she just needs to wait till 6.

Diabetic Cookies Are Now Part of Doreen's Doggie Delights

In my search for the dog nutritionist, my plea was heard and I found a vet that looked over my recipes. As I suspected, Wrigley's Pumpkin Surprise cookies are a safe alternative for Diabetic dogs. Obviously, dog mommies need to watch their diet and it's best to buy the small so you don't over indulge your kiddo, but other than that, the recipe is good to go. Most of these songs are what we listen to at my church. It feeds my Spirit, gives me good things to listen to and keeps me focused on what I'm doing and why. I can't answer God's questions but I can go to Him for comfort when I need it and in the "dog" business there is a lot of comfort needed. If I let my thoughts go where they wanted and didn't direct them I would be a total disaster by now, depressed and angry, but I can honestly say, I am relatively happy, taking one day at a time and trying to make a difference to one dog at a time learning as I go.

Hugs,
Doreen

Do You Clean Your Dog Bowls?

Cleaning the dog bowls used to be such a chore for me. I just wouldn't do it. I mean...I would clean them but not every feeding and when Idid clean them, I had to soak them to get them clean. After Lucy and Wrigley got sick last month from the Canidae and before I knew it was the food that made them ill, I thought it was from unclean bowls or at least the unclean bowls contributed to their illness. I promised them that I would start being a better mommy and start washing out their dishes after they eat. What I've noticed is it is much easier to wash out their bowl directly after they are finished eating then when it sits and dries. So, I wait the minute it takes them to eat and wipe the bowls out with a soapy sponge and hot water and they are ready for the next meal. One more thing off my "to do" list.

Doreen's Doggie Delights Website

I can't believe I haven't enclosed my website before now. THEY LOVE IT! Of course, was their any doubt? LOL They whine, well, Lucy whines to get out of bed in the morning knowing food is coming. And Wrigley, he sits and wait, ears perked while I fix his bowl of food, however, he doesn't wolf down his food. He is a slow eater, unlike his sister.

Rice cooked in chicken broth with mixed veggies. a handful of cooked chicken (which is more protein than they get in a bag of kibble, I'm sure!) and on occasion, some cottage cheese. I knew in the beginning stools might be loose, so I added cottage cheese to their meal day 3 and day 4 along with just a little by itself as a snack on day two and I've had no problems with sick dogs. Their coats are very soft and shiny. Lucy's actually looks thicker. And Mom? Well, I'm happy to be giving them good healthy food.

I found rice at a cheap price, .56 a pound. I also bought some cans of tuna in oil for emergency food. I got one of my roaster chickens out of the freezer yesterday and have a couple of days before I need to cook it. After I cook it, I will let it cool over night before I worry about taking it off the bones, just because I won't be in a hurry, like I was when I first started. Then, I will cook the rice and veggies in the broth and we will be ready for another week. All for about 5 bucks or so for two dogs. Not too bad and well worth the peace of mind.

Oh, just a little side note, this morning, Wrigley decided to play his finicky side and spit out his green beans. LOL Oh well...more for Lucy.

Is Canidae Making Your Dog Sick?

Check out this link http://www.consumer

and see if it is what's been bothering your pooch. Wrigley has been sick several times this last bag and I've had to force feed both of them which is very odd for Lucy because she LOVES to eat! After I got the email last night containing this link, my husband and I finally made our decision that I will make their food from now on. NO MORE KIBBLE! They get crunchy snacks from my homemade cookies and they are nutritious and healthy and I know what's in them. I'm tired of the unknown and you know what they say...knowledge is power so I'm going to be empowered where my dogs are concerned and I hope and suggest you do the same. They deserve it. Am I suggesting you cook for your dogs? No. I'm just suggesting that you look into and keep searching for a good brand of dog food. I thought that was what I was getting when I bought Nutro, but that wasn't the case, then Canidae, so I'm done looking and spending money on crap dog food. I'll spend it on actual meat and chicken and veggies they like.

I'm very happy about this decision and was glad to watch them wolf down their breakfast this morning.

Hugs to all!

The Four Paws Pimple Ball with Bell ALERT!!

Please stop using this and ALL Pimple toys and pass on this information. Click here to read
> about Chai's ordeal after his tongue became stuck inside the ball, and
> the subsequent amputation of his tongue (please note, there are
> graphic pictures of the damage caused by this ball)
>
> The design of the ball creates a vacuum while the dog is chewing on
> the ball and the tongue becomes stuck inside the ball causing
> constriction and swelling. Chai is not the only dog that has been
> injured while playing with this ball.
>
> Concerned dog owners have contacted the manufacturer of this toy. The
> company stands by the toy, but has claimed that they are voluntarily
> recalling the toy to retool it so that it is safe. They claim to have
> contacted their distributors and told them to return their stock of
> this toy until the retooled toy can replace it.
>
> We are unsure as to when this voluntary recall was enacted, but we've
> done a google search (as of 20 August 2008 at 7 p.m.) and have found
> up to 22 stores that are still carrying this product.
>
> Please crosspost to every dog owner that you know and warn them of
> this toy. If you see this toy in a pet store, please notify the
> manager that this toy is considered dangerous and that the
> manufacturer claims to have voluntarily recalled the toy. Have the
> manager contact the manufacturer directly and encourage them to remove it from the shelves.
>
> If you see someone on the Internet that is still selling this toy,
> please feel free to e-mail them with the following:
>
> The Four Paws Pimple Ball with Bell (Item #20227-001, UPC Code 0
> 4566320227 9) listed on your site has severely injured several dogs.
> Allen Simon, the President and CEO of Four Paws Inc. has responded to
> e-mail inquiries and has assured his customers that it is voluntarily
> recalling this toy and says it has notified its vendors of this
> recall. We would not like to hear of other dogs being injured by this
> toy, so please remove this toy from your inventory, and if possible,
> notify your customers that this toy can be dangerous to their pet. We have been giving a Vitamin E and a Omega 3 (Fish Oil) you know the gel capsules daily to Lucy and Wrigley in their food. Most of the time I just drop them in their kibble, but they really like crunching down on the fish one and getting that fishy oil taste right in their mouth. Wrigley is finicky and if its in his food, sometimes he'll play with it and not eat it till I bust it open for him. So, I'm learning to do it this way now and not fight him on it. The other one is so small I don't think they notice it.

Recently, they were both kinda sick, well, Lucy was very sick with diareaha and I stopped all hard food for 24hrs and then started her on cottage cheese and yogurt and then rice and hamburger. Cottage cheese works for her all the time when she's a little loose. The experts say pumpkin and I have a ton of that around but that didn't really do anything I didn't think. I gave her some and that is what she took her pills with but I don't think it did anything one way or the other. Anyway, I also stopped her vitamins and since she wasn't getting them, I didn't give them to Wrigley either.

The following week, Wrigley starting feeling ill. He wasn't eating, had bad gas, which is very abnormal for him, so we were still not giving vitamins. After another week after everyone was back to normal, I notice their coats not quite as shiney or soft. I started putting them back on it and what a major difference. Wrigley is so black he shines like black silk.

The only problem with this is they become so soft, I can't keep my hands off them if they are laying by me. And usually, they are trying to sleep so, I keep waking them. LOL But, I guess that's a good problem for them when so many out their don't get touched at all.

Need Pet Care Help?

So many times pet owners get hit with a vet bill they just can not afford. Here are some links that you may find helpful:

Organizations that can help owners who cannot afford vet care

Here is a list of organizations that can help owners who cannot afford vet care. A couple are for rescue organizations and homeless pets. Please forward this list to anyone you think it might help.

American Animal Hospital Association
http://www.aahahelpingpets.org/home/
"The heartbreak happens all too often ? a pet owner is unable to
afford treatment and their sick or injured companion animal pays the
price. If the owner is elderly, disabled or on a fixed income, the
cost of care may be too much of a stretch for their pocketbook.
Perhaps they have been victimized by crime, property loss or a job
layoff and are experiencing a temporary financial hardship ? making it
too difficult to afford pet care. And some animals, brought to clinics
by Good Samaritans, don't have an owner to pay for treatment. Whatever
the situation, the fact remains the same: When sick or injured animals
are unable to receive veterinary care, they suffer. Through the AAHA
Helping Pets Fund, veterinary care is possible for sick or injured
pets even if they have been abandoned or if their owner is
experiencing financial hardship."

Angels 4 Animals
www.Angels4Animals.org
"Angels4Animals, a non-profit organization and a program of Inner
Voice Community Services, has a mission to serve as the guardian
angel of animals whose caretakers find themselves in difficult
financial situations. At Angels4Animals we believe that animal owners
should not have to say goodbye to the animals that they love. Our
work is accomplished in conjunction with veterinary clinics across
the country, eager to assist as many animals, and their owners, as
possible. Our e-mail is listed above, our phone number is 540-939-4035.
Our Mission Statement:
The Mosby Foundation is organized exclusively for charitable purposes, to assist in the care of sick, injured, abused, neglected and /or homeless dogs in order to ready them for placement in loving and permanent homes.

It's really very simple. A rescue group, foster person, shelter or vet has a dog that requires medical care and there aren't sufficient funds for that treatment. The Mosby Foundation is contacted by a licensed veterinarian with case details. Our Board decides whether we can help, and if so, how.

Many rescued dogs need medical or rehabilitative care prior to adoption. Often dogs lack current vaccinations, need spay/neuter, or have other medical needs.

For example, if there is a dog at a shelter who a vet certifies is healthy, yet has tested positive for heartworm, The Mosby Foundation could decide to provide a portion or all of the funds required for heartworm treatment. The dog would then be healthy and adoptable to a permanent home.

The Mosby Foundation is totally funded by donations and run by a committed group of volunteers.

Carole Adams
President, The Mosby Foundation

Animal Wish List

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AnimalWishList/

The "Animal Wish List" yahoo group is a Charitable group where pet owners, animal rescuers and sanctuary owners, and animal lovers come to post messages about the items, supplies, volunteer work, and/or funds they need in caring for animals. I didn't make it myself. Someone did a lot of research to come up with this extensive list. I have done the test on several foods I was feeding to my two and have changed because of this list. I want only the best for my furkids as I'm sure you do too.

Since kibble is their main source of nutrition, please take a good look at what you are feeding your dog and please make adjustments as needed. It's only a few dollars more. Personally, I feed my two Canidae. I can get it right at the local feed store, Agard's. It's about $30 for a 40# bag and it last about a month for two dogs at about a cup each twice a day. (Of course they get cookies too J )

Don't you agree that your dogs deserve good food? Now take the test and see what they've been eating and how it rates.

If you've been giving good food, I'm proud of you, now give good snacks and round out their nutrition. Of course, you can get them right here from me.

If you've not been giving good food, there is no time like the present to change, however you must do it gradually. Mix the new food with the old food about half and half for about a week. Then go about three quarters new to one quarter old and then finally get rid of the old. But don't toss it! The local animal shelter will be glad to take your left over.

How to grade your dog’s food:
Start with a grade of 100: 1)
For every listing of "by-product", subtract 10 points 2)
For every non-specific animal source ("meat" or "poultry", meat, meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points 3)
If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points 4)
For every grain "mill run" or non-specific grain source, subtract 5 points 5)
If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first five ingredients (i.e. "ground brown rice", "brewer’s rice", "rice flour" are all the same grain), subtract 5 points 6)
If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points 7)
If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points 8 )
If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points 9)
If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points 10)
If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2 points 11)
If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points 12)
If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points 13)
If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog is not allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points 14)
If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog is not allergic to beef), subtract 1 point 15)
If it contains salt, subtract 1 point Extra Credit: 1)
If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points 2)
If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, add 5 points 3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points 4)
If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points 5)
If the food contains fruit, add 3 points 6)
If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points 7)
If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points 8 )
If the food contains barley, add 2 points 9)
If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points 10)
If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point 11)
If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point 12)
For every different specific animal protein source (other than the first one; count "chicken" and "chicken meal" as only one protein source, but "chicken" and "" as 2 different sources), add 1 point 13)
If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point 14)
If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are pesticide-free, add 1 point

94-100+ = A 86-93 = B 78-85 = C 70-77 = D <70>

Are you surprised? I was...now...as an FYI, there has been a lot of "stuff" about Nutro in the dog world. Not good news there, dogs getting sick on their food, some dying. This is one food I would for sure stay clear of.

Now, don't forget their snacks! www.doreensdoggiedelights.com

A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.
5. Talk to me. It used to be one of my favorites as a little girl. The poor little bird searching high and low looking all over the place for his mother. He asked everyone, even heavy equipment, cows if they were his mother. He just wanted a mother.

I think of this story every time I think about Dolly. This poor dog really had a rough beginning to her life and now is in a wonderful foster home, but still is looking for her mother. It grieves my heart that she has to make one more move but I know that one more move will be to her forever home. Right now, she thinks she is already in her forever home. She's happy and content and in a routine. She's adjusted to her new life. Little does she know she is just in a holding pattern. It's sad really. She deserves better. They all do.

Coming from an abused home, being run over from her own parents at age 12 weeks and left to heal broken bones with no medical attention must have been horrendous for her to endure but she did it. Dolly is a real trooper. About 6 months later, Lillian rescued out of a feces filled pen, filthy, cold and hungry. Her water bucket was frozen solid and the lean to she had for shelter turned on her and fell, scalping her leaving a gash on her head. Covered in fleas, Lillian took her home and rescued her from that hell hole.

Dolly's front leg had a crook in it. We raised money to get her to the vet. After x-rays, we found out that her hip socket was out of joint and needed repair quickly, cuz Dolly was in pain. Her leg was crooked because that was where it was broken and how it grew back. She also had broken her pelvis in 5 places but that seemed to have healed ok.

We put out pleas across the internet and collected funds, did fundraisers, people bought my cookies and I was able to donate too and we got enough money to get her hip surgery. Then we went after her leg. Some folks wanted to just amputate it, but Lillian and I wouldn't have any part of that! We collected more money and finally, she's had her surgery. her leg is about 2 inches shorter than the rest of her legs, but at least it's straight! YAY!!

Now, she is in need of her forever home. DOLLY'S MOMMY...PLEASE COME AND TAKE HER HOME. She needs you. She's a healthy girl, happy, submissive, dog, cat, kid friendly. She's had all her shots.

Adoption fee is $150. An old gramma dog, she wanted things quiet around the house, but if you've ever had a puppy around, quiet is NOT what Blackie got. Lucy wanted to play, not alone either but with Blackie! But, Blackie wanted nothing to do with this little growing bundle of energy.

Eventually, Lucy almost doubled Blackies weight, but she knew her place was to submit to the elder dog, except of course in the middle of a zoomie around the living room. Mid-zoomie was not a time to stop for anything or anyone...except Mom of course.

As I would come in from work, greeted by hundreds of kisses, lots of tail wags and way too much excitement from an untrained one year old lab, revelation finally came. It was time for training. So, off to PetSmart we went me and Lucy. She was the star pupil. Aced every test! She's so smart and Blackie helped train her from the beginning. However, we still had issues when I came home from work.

She loved to chew on her bone and we got her to start looking for her bone as I came in the house. When I walk in the door, I stopped greeting her and started asking her, Where's your bone?" Immediately, she went looking for it. No more jumping, no more knocking me down the stairs. Problem solved. Sometimes, she had her bone waiting for me at the back door, but it was in her mouth, tail wagging as she waited for praise. So, we started making sure she had to actually go look for it to give me a chance to get up the stairs and in the house. LOL

After a while, she got the hang of leaving me alone till I got up and in the house and we didn't have to play that game any longer.

Then, we got Wrigley. At 6-8 months old we rescued him from the woods in mid-January...Michigan winter. Not fit for man nor beast in that weather but here is this beautiful boy, thrown away. Anyway, we brought him home and the back door problems started all over again. It took me a while to remember what we did to correct the problem with Lucy but when I did, Wrigley took to it like fish to water. He LOVED the game! Lucy didn't need to go find the bone, she just needed to get her bit of attention, but Wrigley, oh my goodness, his bone is always kept in his crate, so he always knows where it is. He barges inside, and snatches it hurriedly and runs over to where we are to show us he has it. Then, if that wasn't enough, he prances the length of the house as if to say, "Look at me...I have my bone! Look at me everybody...Look at meeeeee!" It's the cutest, funniest thing you ever saw. When we acknowledge his bone and what a good job he did at finding it, he will plop done and start chewing. No jumping, no...glad your home, nothing, it's all about the bone. If it wasn't for the bone, he'd be all over us.

So, my question to you is...Where is your bone?

Stu Biscuits

Today, I'm making Stu Biscuits. Shaped like dog bones, large and small sized, mixed with bacon. If my husband doesn't wake up pretty soon he will wake disappointed. Why? Because when the bacon begins to bake, it smells like breakfast cooking. The whole house smells good! It's kind of a dirty trick and I don't really mean to play it but I do have to work. LOL

The dogs go crazy for them since I added the bacon to the mix. I liked them just fine before. The reminded me of salad croutons. Crunchy and perfect with soup. Yes, I know sounds kinda funny but as I've said on my website, I'm not going to let my dogs eat anything anymore that I'm not going to eat (except their chew bones...they can have them! LOL) So, we share everything. They eat human grade food. that is good for them and it's easy to deal with. So, between my homemade cookies and their human grade dog food. everyone is happy.

OH...you will be happy too. The cost of my cookies I don't think can be beat. $4.99 per half pound, comes in large and small sizes, same price for either size.

Check out my website: http://www.doreensdoggiedelights.com/

Okay, I've got my bakers hat on, better get off this thing.

Animal Rescue Site Click Once A Day

For every daily click, Animal get 1/2 a bowl of food free. Yes, I make dog cookies. Healthy ones. Lucy's Cherry Chewies, made with Marichino Cherries and Cinnamon Applesauce, April May's Carrot Cookies, made with fresh grated carrots and crushed pineapple, Stu Biscuits made with Bacon bits, mixed veggies and rice and Wrigley's Pumpkin Surprise made with Peanut Butter and Banana, all homemade, all delicious. Yes, I snack on them myself. Of course, the dogs look at me funny as I'm eating their snacks, but at least I can share with them and not feel guilty. LOL

One of my customers told me she tasted the Lucy's Cherry Chewies and thought they'd be good covered in chocolate. Well, this weekend, we had a chocolate party and I just happened to have leftover chocolate and some Lucy's Cherry Chewies fresh baked. I couldn't resist dipping one in the chocolate and I must admit...it DID taste pretty good! She might be on to something. Of course, the cherry cookies are my favorites, but then again, they are all good. (Chocolate is TOXIC for dogs...never give it to dogs!) This however did make a good treat for mom!

I also have a training treat that we like to snack on, called Zipper Doodles. Seems kinda funny people eating dog cookies or dog snacks but they are healthy and it's something else you can share with your best pal.
